About us
The Mill House sits between a water mill and a 900 year old church, on the river at Langford.
The house
The current owners have run the hotel as a family business since 2000, and have put their heart and soul into refurbishing this large, 300 year old property.
The house has changed over the centuries. The Georgian front was added about 150 years ago. In the 1980s the separate red brick building at the back, once the village bakery, was refurbished to give more rooms, with a small extension joining it to the main house.
Next door, St Giles Church has a distinctive rounded apse that dates back to Saxon times. It is open most days from 10am to 12pm, and has a small village shop in the vestry.
The valley
Langford is in the Chelmer Valley, a protected leisure and tourism corridor with the Chelmer canal, the River Blackwater, Beeleigh Lock, the Langford weir pool, Elms Farm Park and Maldon Golf Club.
The river beside the hotel is known as the Langford cut, and joins the freshwater side of the Blackwater. Otters have come back to this area, and it's not unusual to see muntjac deer, owls, herons, kingfishers, finches, blue tits, robins, grey squirrels, rabbits and bats. Ducks, swans and Canada geese visit the hotel regularly.
We have a rowing boat that guests may use, at their own risk.
Getting here
Although Langford feels rural, it's a five minute drive from the historic town of Maldon and five minutes from the A12 (Hatfield Peverel exit). Chelmsford city centre is 15 minutes away and Colchester 25.
